∇ What is powdercoating?
Powdercoating is a surface finishing technique that involves spraying an electrostatically charged coating onto the surface of metals as a dry powder, to be subsequently cured in an oven. The dry particles of powder, consisting of dry resin and pigment, heats up and forms a solid film. This curing process produces a consistent hard finish that is thicker than conventional liquid paint coverings, and fuses to the metal to form a smooth, texture-free protective and decorative coating. The result? An attractive, tough, durable finish that is resistant to damage and uniform in appearance and texture.
As there is no carrier fluid or solvents involved, the powdercoating process emits few volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and is therefore eco-friendly.
∇ What is the powdercoating process?
The powdercoating process can vary depending on the specific needs of our clients, however it can generally be divided into five important steps:
- Surface Cleaning – Sandblasting, chemical stripping and/or solvent cleaning ensures that the surface is entirely clean, as the best powdercoating results are achieved with a clean surface to adhere to, and ensure a surface free of foreign particles such as dirt, oil or rust.
- Pre-Treatment – a key component of the powdercoating process, the product is treated with chemicals to further prepare the surface for optimal powder coating through a 5-stage flood wash pre-treatment process. We will soon also offer a warranty approved 6-stage process using Oxsilan RTU, which is chromate free and environmentally friendly.
- Rinsing and Drying – a final step before the powder application process to ensure a high quality finish for our clients’ products.
- Powder Application – Ever New uses a state of the art Spray Booth to apply the powder. The powder coating is sprayed towards the object using electrostatic guns, which impart a positive electrostatic charge, allowing the powder to adhere to the metal surface.
- Curing – The product is heated to the relevant temperature, resulting in a highly durable, texture-free finished surface.
